What is Upcycling?

Upcycling is the act of taking something no longer in use and giving it a second life and a new function. It is a creative process where waste is looked at as a resource and is repurposed into something more practical, valuable and beautiful than before.

Difference between Recycling and Upcycling

Many people get confused between upcycling and recycling. Recycling takes consumer materials like  plastic, paper, metal and glass — and breaks them down through (commercial tools, machines) so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality. Whereas  upcycling does not require the breaking down of materials through.

Instead it requires creativity and innovation and is a hands on experience that  can be done at home by every individual. By choosing upcycling as our main initiative, we wish to enforce the 'every individual makes a difference' ideology and help individuals gain the satisfaction of using their creativity and  actively being part of saving and conserving the environment.

Why Upcycling?

Both recycling and upcycling are important as they reuse materials instead of throwing them away. Less landfill waste has a positive impact on the environment.

Upcycling  is a great way to reuse materials and reduce our carbon footprint because to take something no longer of use  and put your own spin on it and make it your own is considered  more meaningful and satisfactory than  going out and buying something made by a machine. The upcycled product in your house will always be a pleasant reminder of your innovation and participation in helping the environment.

How to Upcycle?

Anyone can be an upcycler. It is universal; No matter where you live,  how much money you have, or how old you are, all you need is a spark of creativity and a strong will to save your environment. Here are two ways to help you ignite your upcycling journey:  Think of something that you would like to have, like a planter, penholder, or think of something that you would like to upcycle, like your shampoo bottle. Here at Happy Nests, we have chosen plastic (products) as our first upcycling project.

Where should I Upcycle?

The glorious thing about upcycling is that we can do anywhere. You can upcycle at home, at school, at your workplace,.... the boundaries are limitless. Here at Happy Nests, we aspire to provide a sustainable business opportunity for the women in our community by entering the global market of upcycled products made by the women of the community.

And... When?

The boundaries of upcycling have no limits! The only limit is your creativity, imagination, and ingenuity.
