People from all over the world will feed thousands of sparrows on 6th march 2011 from 10 am to 6 pm with the help of 52000 bird feeders distributed free in different cities of world by Burhani Foundation (India).
Perhaps it will set a new world record of feeding birds in such a large number at same day and same time in different cities across the globe.
Once, those twittering birds seen easily in our backyard are now vanishing due to environmental changes. Sparrows are dying speedily and there is a need to save these little creatures.
On the special occasion of the 100th Milad (Birthday) of Dawoodi Bohra Spiritual Leader His Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammad Burhannudin, an initiative Project SOS has been taken by Burhani Foundation (India) to protect the endangered tiny cute bird sparrow.
Project SOS: Save Our Sparrows (SOS) has gained much appreciation from many environmentalists and bird conservators. Out of 52000 bird feeders distributed, Udaipur’s Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat has received 825 feeders. On 6th march, this event will start at Chetak Cinema at Chetak Circle from 10 am to 6 pm.
The project came under action in a meeting lead by Tehkhum Bhaisaab – close relative of H.H Syedna in Mumbai on 1st March where representatives of every city and other religious dignitaries discussed on the subject and finally 6th march was the day decided to observe the final day.
As 6th March 2011 is also the birthday of Syedna as per the Gregorian calendar and March 25th as per the Egyptian Islamic calendar and this biggest conservation effort would be held during the celebrations spanning over three weeks. Also, the day 20th March is dedicated as World Sparrow Day.
Project SOS was started by India’s renowned nature and wild life passionate Mohammad Dilawar, he is also coordinating in this event with Burhani Foundation.
Moiz Kanorwala, one of the dedicated volunteer from Udaipur said that “three years back in a public sermon, Sydena said that birds and human being have a close relations, these two living beings have been growing and living together, today we human beings are still surviving happily but these little sparrows are disappearing in a fast pace, this is an effort to save one of the closest neighbor of human being” "
Burhani Foundation in association with HH Dr.Syedna Taher Saifuddin Memorial Foundation announced the launch of their conservation project “Save our Sparrows”. The project SOS was inaugurated by the message from his Holiness Dr. Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin Saheb – Though the sparrow is small in size yet it owns his own place in the environment. Let us hope and pray that the project would succeed in creating awareness among all which is the teaching of Prophet Mohammed .SOS is one such effort.
The event was also attended by the Chief Guest Digambar Kamat , Chief Minister of Goa and was also joined by the Guests of Honor- Padma Nana Chudasama,( President of I Love Mumbai) , Milind Deora (MP), Piyush Goel (MP), Amin Patel (MLA), Moulana Athar Dehlavi, and Nasim Siddiqui.
The project distributed a record 52,000 bird feeders free across the country building an easy and functional conservation tool to save the birds. The project launched in 260 cities and townships across the country making the feeders readily available to boost house sparrow population. The sparrow feeders are specially designed for storing food grains and also can be easily installed in residential and office areas making it an easy, hygienic and sustainable source of food for small birds. It was the first of its kind attempt in such a large scale
Commenting on the Mumbai launch, Shezada Huzefa Bhai Saheb Moiuddin Saheb , Chairman, Burhani Foundation said “Our latest step to save the ecosystem is Project SOS and in order to make it a success we call upon all our friends from different walks of life, institutes, corporate and nature conservation organizations to come forward and involve them in this worldwide project to save the sparrows”.
He further adds, “The Sparrow, a once omnipresent feature of urban environment, has seen a drastic decline over the past few years, largely due to lack of food and habitat. Researchers also fear that the decline of this humble bird may point to a larger threat – that of the degrading urban environment worldwide. On the occasion of 100th Milaad Mubarak – we have chosen the valuable ambassador of nature to propagate the message of conservation.”
Further commenting on the successful launch Milind Deora, (Congress) MP, said, “I have been associated with Burhani foundation for a decade by now and very proud of their efforts and the work they do for the society. I wish them success for their efforts towards the environment.”

The various projects which they undertake for environment and serving the society is very appreciable. We all should work together for our motherland and let peace prevail on us” "
